New visitors to Hayling Island are often surprised by how accessible it is. Close to the A3, M3, A27 and mainline train routes, Hayling is easy to get reach either for a day visit or a longer stay. Most importantly (and a surprise to some) is that, despite being a true island, we are connected to the mainland by a road bridge meaning that you can drive straight on.

Hayling Island is on the South Coast of Hampshire, situated between the cities of Portsmouth and Chichester and inland of the Isle of Wight. Our closest neighbouring towns are Havant, Emsworth & Waterlooville.

Travelling to Hayling Island by road

With the opening of the Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 in 2011, Hayling Island is more accessible by road than ever – Particularly to those travelling from London.

Whatever direction you are coming from, you want to head for the A27/M27 South Coast road.

For visitors coming from the North or London this is most easily done by following either the A3 or the M3 south until it joins with the South coast route.

Leave the A27 at the Havant / Hayling Island exit.

Head South on to the A3023 which takes you on to Hayling Island. Road access to Hayling Island is through a single road bridge that makes up a stretch of the A3023. As the only access road this predictably can get busy during peak times, especially during the summer, so be sure to leave adequate time when travelling in either direction.

All roads on Hayling Island operate either a 30mph or 40mph speed limit.

 

Travelling to Hayling Island by train

Our closet operational railway station is Havant (HAV). Regular services run from London Victoria, London Waterloo, Gatwick, Portsmouth, Southampton and Brighton to Havant station.

From Havant station travellers can either take a taxi or hop on a bus from the nearby bus station. Information on rail travel can be obtained from the National Rail Enquiries Line on 08457 48 49 50 or you can make a booking online at thetrainline.com.

By Bus & Coach

Those wanting to visit Hayling Island by bus will need to wait at Stand B at Havant Bus Station. There are frequent buses Monday to Saturday between 09:00 and 18:00. Regular connections outside of these times from 06.40 until 20.45

The 30 service visits the west part of the island first and is best for those looking to get visit Beachlands, Funfair and the Wednesday car boot. The 30 runs at every 20 and 50 minutes past the hour between 09:00 and 18:00 Mondays through to Saturdays.

The 31 service visits the east of the island first and is best for those looking to get towards Sandy Point and the numerous caravan parks on the east of Hayling Island. The 31 runs at every 05 and 35 minutes past the hour between 09:00 and 18:00 on Mondays through to Saturdays.

For those wanting to visit Hayling Island on a Sunday the 30 and 31 run every other hour.

The 30 service starts at 08.55 through to 16.55

The 31 service starts at 09.55 through to 17.55

Please note that on public holidays the bus schedules run as a Sunday service

By Ferry

The Hayling Island ferry service to Eastney is currently not running.  The hope is that this service will return at some point in the future.

International Travel

Airports

Our closest international airport is Southampton International Airport, which is 23 miles by road or a short train journey to Havant Station.

Hayling Island is 67 miles from Heathrow airport and 68 from Gatwick.

International Ferry

The international ferry port at Portsmouth is 8 miles by road from Hayling Island .

Hayling Island has been a popular holiday resort since it was first joined to the mainland by bridge in 1824. Even prior to that the wealthy would arrive by boat or causeway to enjoy what was then an exclusive spa resort. The bridge, and the later rise of the motor car, made Hayling Island far more accessible to the masses and holidays on Hayling reached their peak in the 1970s before cheap foreign holidays enticed holiday makers further afield.

The Island’s peaceful charm, open spaces, safe environment and miles of seafront still bring past visitors back for holidays and encourage new family visitors in. Today though they are joined by a new generation of leisure visitors who come primarily for the excellent watersports that Hayling Island has to offer.
