The Mayor of Havant Councillor Paul Buckley is joining members of the local community and school children to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

A service will be taking place on Monday 27th January at Havant Cemetery Eastern Road Havant at 11.00am.

It will be led by Havant Councillor Gerald Shimbart and will include readings from the Mayor of Havant and Councillor Leah Turner who is a member of the Jewish community. Councillor Turner will read a story of hope relating to the story of the Kindertransport.

The memorial day event marks the 69th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The theme of this years service is Journeys. Learning how journeys undertaken were often experiences of persecution and terror for so many people who suffered in the Holocaust.

The Mayor of Havant Councillor Paul Buckley says: This is an important date in our calendar when in a simple ceremony we reflect upon the impact of mans inhumanity to man through persecution conflict and genocide. We remember those who suffered and died in the Holocaust and other atrocities and hope that we can learn from the lessons of history.
