Hampshire County Council changed its rules regarding pupil absence on Tuesday. These changes will see parents facing tougher measures if allowing their offspring to be absent from school during term time. Persistently late pupils parents will also be subject to penalties.

The councils new code of conduct could see more notices being issued with a strike rate of 10 previously you had 20 chances before fines were issued. Hampshire County Council handed out 58 fines during 2012-2013s academic year compared to Portsmouth City Council who served 796 in the same period.

Students who miss exams when dates have been published in advance will also be subject to these laws. Fees will remain 60 if paid within 28 days and 120 if settled within 42 days.

Councillor Pete Edgar said its more important than ever for lessons not to be missed. Persistent lateness and going on holiday are not excuses for being absent during term time and missing important lessons. Councillor Edgar added that this is the law of the land and it has to be applied.
