Its being reported on our forum and Facebook pages that an unfortunate kitesurfer was lofted up the beach while making use of the strong morning wind. Details are a little hazy but it appears the accident happened just before 10am.
An onshore southerly blow was topping 30 knots and there was a significant swell running. The mid tide water state would have only added a tricky element to the mix.
Onshore wind directions give little room for error. Kiting (and windsurfing) parallel to the beach means all water users end up tracking along a similar line and a greater awareness is needed to avoided crashing. Launching and landing also proves tricky with onshore winds – gusts can catch the unwary and literally fling them shingleward – which is whats reported to have happened in this instance.
Accidents of this nature are rare; this being (thankfully) one of only a handful that happen throughout each year. Kitesurfing and windsurfing are relatively safe sports provided aficionados know their limitations common sense is used and courtesy is given to other water users. Most help one another out and on any breezy Beachlands day youll witness this camaraderie and support.
Hayling enjoys a thriving kite and windsurf scene with many enthusiasts living on the island or travelling to the island to participate regularly. This means that riders are normally in the company of others who look out for one another.
This mornings injured party is reported to have been helped by fellow kiters and the alarm raised. Ambulance teams were quickly on the scene and an efficient procedure carried out. According to Councillor Andy Lenaghan the rider suffered broken ribs and was taken to hospital. Other eyewitness reports suggest the gentleman in question had a cut to his head. We wish the kitesurfer all the best.
