The third week of September is the annual Marine Conservation Society (MCS) Beachwatch Big Weekend where participants are encouraged to head to their local stretch of sand and help remove marine litter that can build up over time.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the Beachwatch clean-up event and the MCS wants to make it the biggest and best yet.
With a large beach thats regularly used by residents and non Hayling locals alike its in everyones interest to make sure that the spots around the island remain clean safe and user friendly. The coveted Blue Flag award that Hayling so proudly flies can only remain with us if our sands and waters are up to scratch.
Every day tonnes of marine junk washes onto the UKs beaches and if we dont do our bit then the problem would soon become overwhelming.
Marine litter not only looks unsightly it can cause damage to local ecosystems and poison or kill marine wildlife.
With more volunteers more beaches will inevitably get cleaned.
If you want to take part then head over to mcsuk.org/beachwatch for more.
