The Portsmouth News is this morning reporting that Hayling is now confirmed as not being included in the 20mph speed limit pilot scheme thats being rolled out across Hampshire later this year.

After an almost equal split in opinion from residents Councillor Sean Woodward decided against including the island in the scheme.

Islanders voiced their views citing the inclusion of such long straight roads as Staunton Avenue was totally irrelevant and as no obvious majority decision could be reached the plans have now been scrapped.

Had Hayling given an overwhelming majority response to the pilot such as in Fareham then the situation may have been different.

Tony Higham of Hayling Residents Association said: It was considered a combination of unnecessary and too extensive.

They wanted to put a 20mph limit on roads for which it was totally irrelevant. Staunton Avenue was one of them.

It was felt there was an issue in certain roads in the shopping area where it is very much more restricted.

I was against the idea as it was proposed but not totally against the idea.

If the plans had been implemented then the cost would have been around 14000. Councillor Woodward has said that he hasnt ruled out similar plans for the island in the future.
