Officials have issued warnings about the current sweltering heatwave and a level three alert has been put in place for south eastern parts of the country. Level three is one step down from more serious alerts and concerns have been raised about the very young the very old and those with chronic disease. People are being asked to check in on neighbours and friends to make sure all is well.
Last night the Met Office released forecast data suggesting Haylings temperatures could well reach into the 30s today and advice is to take necessary precautions. Warnings have also been issued about people choosing to swim in the sea to cool off. Hayling Island is a tidal location and as such anyone entering the water needs to be aware of tides and its effects.
The AA has also put out advice for motorists preparing to head for beaches around the UK this coming weekend. Getaway traffic is set to increase significantly as people living in towns and cities head for beaches in places like Hayling.
Looking into next week and temperatures are expected to stay high which may be good news for some.
Gemma Plumb from MeteoGoup commented: There is no proper definition of heatwave in the UK – but we are undoubtedly in the midst of one now.
It is the longest period of hot weather since 2006 with prolonged temperatures above the average for the time of year.
Normally we can expect it to reach 20-22C (68-71.6F) in England and Wales – today parts of the Midlands East Anglia the south coast and London could see 30C-plus.
At the moment it looks as though the warm weather is going to stay well into next week at least.
