Paul Lewis the man responsible for helming the Hayling RNLI Lifeboat has decided to step down from his position having now reached the ripe age of 45.

Growing up on the island sailing and windsurfing the father of two joined the service at age 26 and has been part of numerous dramatic rescues in the waters surrounding Hayling.

Two incidents stick out as being particular noteworthy and demonstrate Pauls character strength of will and determination.

The first was when two little girls became stuck in the mud with an incoming tide having walked out into Emsworth Harbour. Paul literally had to dig one of the girls out who was moments away from being submerged. Both probably wouldnt be here today had it not been for Paul.

The second rescue happened during a horse racing session on the East Winner sand bank where some riders and their animals became cut off by the tide. Paul saved three of the horses with one having to rest its head on Pauls inflated life jacket as it was towed to safety.

Lifeboat operations manager Jonathan Bradbury said: Paul is an absolutely superb seaman and helm I have had complete confidence in sending him to sea in all weathers.

He makes what he does so well look easy. Well miss him at the station but are grateful for his excellent service to the RNLI over many years.
