Reports last week detailing how the shoreline of Langstone Harbour had been littered with filthy sewage after spewing out of a Southern Water pumping station were met with outcries from residents. Fort Cumberland Eastney was inundated with a deluge of rainwater as storms battered the UK. Combined with the usual sewage build up saw the facility unable to cope and overflowed into Langstone Harbour.
Louise MacCallum harbour environment officer has reported that Southern Water has finally finished the clear up and removed teh last of the debris. However a new report (written on Januray 16) regarding the Hayling www.topambienonline.com oysterbeds is due to go before Langstone Harbour Board on February 7 and describes how the area is grossly polluted.
Mrs McCallum commented: Following the story they did make a massive effort and did clean everything up. Hopefully they are going to continue to keep their act clean.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust are also in the process of compiling evidence of how recent storms and extreme conditions has impacted the area. With more bad weather expected at the weekend final assessments of Mother Natures impact will have to wait a while longer.
