The newly installed Hayling sea defences that were finished last year are continuing to hold and do the job of protecting property at Eastoke/Sand Point. Much controversy has surrounded the works since completion with a number of residents voicing concerns over the safety of the structure while others have welcomed it.
As Hayling defends against winters relentless buffeting of strong winds large waves and big tides sea defences are reported to be sticking firm and preventing Mother Nature from doing her worst. Councillor Leah Turner recently posted an update in the Hayling forum from Havant Borough Council reporting on how the barrier faired overnight and the news is positive.
HBC said: Last night the sea defences held. We had staff monitoring the tide from 2am to 5am. There was some overtopping of the prom on Hayling. The Coastal Team large machines are now working on the foreshore to replace it as necessary.
There was some minor flooding in Emsworth and Langstone as is normal for these conditions. We will keep monitoring today.
The forecast is for winds to abate towards the latter part of the day although the island first has to endure another high tide around 15:25 this afternoon. Wave size is forecast to increase and fingers are crossed there arent further problems.
After todays storm its all eyes on Saturday as another deep depression sweeps in from the Atlantic. This new system is predicted to be worse than that of today.
