A new edition of Havants popular borough-wide cycle map updated to show the new routes built in the past year is now available.

The 2013 edition produced in partnership with Sustrans and Groundwork Solent as part of the Solent Cycle project has been extended to cover the southern parishes of East Hampshire District – Rowlands Castle Horndean and Clanfield.

The map includes new sections of cycle infrastructure across the area including footpath 88 on Hayling Island and along New Lane in Leigh Park. It also shows new links proposed for completion in the coming year including two sections of the Hayling Billy Trail either side of Langstone Bridge which will compete this important off-road route between Havant and West Town.

The Borough Cycle Network – adopted by the council as part of its 2011 Cycling Strategy – is also shown on the map in a separate colour scheme so that progress towards its completion can be seen as new cycle facilities are added. National Cycle Network routes which run through the borough – route 2 between Kent and Cornwall route 22 between London and the New Forest and 222 linking trueviagraonline.com Southsea with Chalton – as well as the boundary of the South Downs National Park are all shown in a new key scheme updated for clarity.

Councillor David Collins who is responsible for Environment and Neighbourhood Quality commented “The regular publication of the Borough Cycle Map is an important part of our commitment to support the use of sustainable active transport in the borough. This comes at a time when all parts of government have recognised the importance of clear safe cycle infrastructure in supporting active lifestyles and boosting tourism and local accessibility – for example 3.8 million has recently been awarded to the South Downs National Park to provide new cycle links so people dont have to visit by car. The map demonstrates just how much cycle-friendly infrastructure has already been provided in the area and our ongoing programme ensures that travel by bike around the borough and beyond will be an increasingly viable and attractive option.”

The map is available to download in two sections (Mainland and Hayling Island) at www.havant.gov.uk/getting-and-around-havant-borough/cycling. A printed edition will be available from local libraries cycle shops and colleges shortly.
