Last winter saw an unprecedented number of storms battering Hayling and the UK. In particular the Hayling Billy Trail suffered at the hands of Mother Nature with a large section of the popular pathway eroding into the sea. Although sheltered from the main brunt of serious weather during strong winds and tidal surges Haylings harbour shorelines can still take a pounding.
David Willets Havant MP has said urgent repairs are needed for a chunk of pathway to ensure more land isnt lost. Hampshire Council have fenced off the worst damage.
Mr Willets has sent a letter to the Environment Agency urging them to do something before any major winter storms hit. He feels that not only will it be a loss if the pathway has to be closed to cyclists and walkers but a major piece of historical heritage is vulnerable to disappearing.
Funding seems to be the main stumbling block as it isnt a simple job. Even though the area is relatively small there are cables running under the ground something which needs to be taken into account when repairs are carried out.
Any work will be a combined effort between the council and the Environment Agency. The agency will be asked to financially support the project along with Havant Borough Council.
