After raids were carried out by HM Revenue and Customs on Wednesday July 24 a 46 year old Hayling man was arrested in whats said to be a 3m fuel fraud. Eight other people were taken into custody all suspected of the illegal purchase and sale of rebated kerosene and biofuel. This was then sold on as duty paid road diesel to motorists.
After initial questioning all those arrested were released on bail pending further investigations.
HMRC assistant director of criminal investions said: Motorists need to be aware that using illicit fuel can damage and destroy vehicle engines has a detrimental effect on legitimate fuel traders and deprives the government of money used to fund public services.
