A 63 year old sailor was rescued from Chichester Harbour after being thrown out of his tender during rough weather. While making his way to shore Andrew Lawsons dinghy hit an obstruction causing it to spiral out of control.

Although the water was shallow to start with as he made his way toward land it got progressively deeper until Mr Lawson was forced to call 999 and ask for help. Hayling RNLI promptly responded and made the rescue around 5.30pm a few nights ago.

The tender was later recovered from Northney Shore where it was towed back to the sailing club.

Mr Lawson sustained a broken finger during the accident but paid gratitude to the crew of the lifeboat. In particular he extended his thanks to senior helm Andy Ferguson.

Mr Bartlett from Hayling RNLI commented: Mr Lawson showed great determination and fortitude in trying to solve his situation and avoid calling for help. We are all glad he did so however.
