With a meeting scheduled for later in the year Hayling Heritage Trail and seafront memorial mastermind Robin Walton is set to meet the director of the European Liberation Route Foundation to discuss the possibility of including Hayling in this important project.

The Liberation Route is a planned link between important sites that are connected with Europes liberation during the Second World War. The plan is for tourists to be able to explore the route by car train or bike.

Victoria Van Krieken the Netherlands based leader of the project hopes that the Liberation Route will attract visitors from all over the globe. With many family members caught up in the conflict its hoped that relatives will be able to retrace the steps of parents grandparents and relatives who fought with Allies to liberate Europe.

Mr Walton took the opportunity of speaking with Victoria Van Krieken during her visit to Portsmouth University earlier this year where she expressed an interest in whats been happening on Hayling. The planned autumn meeting will be an opportunity for Mr Walton to show her round Second World War sites on the island take her to the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth and escort her during a visit to the Submarine Museum in Gosport.

At the time of writing there isnt any confirmation but Mr Walton is quietly proud that between him Douglas Sharp and Mike Beel they are ahead of the pack and could end up with a Hayling trail in place.
