Robert Sadler 44 a decorated war veteran from Hayling Island passed away suddenly while at his home on July 16. Over 200 people packed out the chapel at Portchester Crematorium to pay tributes to Mr Sadler the holder of the Queens Commendation for Valuable Service award.
Robert completed a number of tours in different countries including Bosnia Rwanda and Afghanistan. Upon returning to Hayling Mr Sadler became the standard bearer for the Hayling branch of the Royal British Legion and was a regular fixture guitar in hand at many of the islands music jam nights.
Roberts regiment was the 1st Battalion the Queens Regiment and the 2nd Battalion the Princess of Waless Royal Regiment. Known as Sid during his time in the forces a colleague Ian Reeves said: Sid was a true bloke. My friend my buddy and a true true companion to anybody who needed it.
You would never meet a more loyal person.
The gathering of mourners featured many dressed in regimental colours as well as a swathe of Pompey t-shirts recognising Roberts love of football and his local team.
Mrs Payne commented after the service: He was a very humble man and I think he would have been gobsmacked by the turnout.
He had his professionalism but he also touched everyone he came into contact with.
His sense of humour his love and his compassion he was larger than life.
Actual cause of death has been recorded as unascertained and a full inquest is to follow the date of which has so far not been set.
