The south easts population of little terns a rare breed of bird has declined considerably over the last 30 years. Just 31 pairs remain in Langstone Harbour and the RSPB are making efforts to attract more back to the area by using model lookalikes.

In conjunction with the fake birds 1500 tonnes of shingle and crushed cockleshells have been scattered to make the area as appealing as possible. Donations equating to 160000 have allowed this work to be carried out. The RSPBs site manager admits the organisation owes a lot to fund raisers partners and volunteers whove made this possible.

Langstone Harbours habitat is now perfect for little terns to breed and with the new season fast approaching nest sites will be monitored to ensure the programme is a success. In past years nests have been threatened by rising sea levels tides have washed away little tern chicks and unhatched eggs. By keeping a watch from boats and via cameras its hoped Langstones little tern population will thrive.
