Fantasy author Sir Terry Pratchett has leant his support to Hayling Island Bookshop after nominating it as chosen supplier of his favourite books.

A new social media site launched by Penguin Random House UK called My Independent Bookshop is where people will find recommendations of great reads shared by users. Sir Terrys area highlights the Mengham based book store as the place you can buy his top picks.

Included in his 12 recommended titles are American Gods by Neil Gaiman a Portsmouth born author Douglas Adams Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and The Specialist by Charles Sale.

Sir Terry said how independent bookshops helped him hugely at the start of his career long before the masses cottoned on to what he was doing. He believes that My Independent Bookshop is therefore a very very good thing.

After visiting the bookshop in 2008 he went away with a lasting impression which prompted the nomination.

Shop owner Marie Telford said: We were absolutely astonished delighted and honoured to hear that Sir Terry had chosen our tiny bookshop to be linked to his personal bookshop containing his favourite books.

We hosted Terry on Hayling in 2008 for the launch of his book Nation and we are so pleased that he is helping independent bookshops to extend their reach in this way.

We hope many of the readers will come and visit us in person too.
