Two men in their 20s were rescued last night by Hayling Island RNLI. Having tried to take a shortcut but misjudging it with the tide the two were in dire straits as the tide rushed in and cut them off from dry land.

According to reports they were lost and disorientated. By 10.45pm they two had been successfully rescued.

A coastguard spokesman said: They managed to get themselves in quite a dangerous predicament with a rising tide.

Both men were uninjured.
