Itll come as no surprise to Hayling residents that groundwater levels are at a new record high. After the downpours of winter water stores are fit to bursting and have recovered significantly after previous years droughts. Unprecedented amounts of wet weather through December and January have topped up stores to previously unseen amounts.
Portsmouth Water is reporting for instance that measurements at Idsworth near Rowlands Castle are significant and break all previous records. The company released a statement which said: Groundwater levels have now dramatically recovered to new record levels.
At the beginning of January levels were approximately 2m above the long-term average and now due to the exceptional rain are 10.5m above them.
As we move ever closer to spring and the Easter holidays it looks like hosepipe bans wont be a cause for concern. It is stressed however that water is a precious resource and efforts should still be made to conserve where possible.
Whether attributed to climate change or not weather patterns are increasingly volatile and such we just dont know when the next dry spell will hit.
