During the run up to the weekend there was a degree of anxiety in terms of the weather forecast for Sundays RNLI open/demo day. The potential for rain was tangible but the Gods smiled and blessed the get together with some great conditions.
A healthy number of visitors turned out to see how our much needed lifeboat crew conducts its work and what they get up to.
With regular lifeboat fly bys a fire engine cherry picker – that visitors could have a ride in – on land stalls and guided tours of the boat house the RNLI open day was a great success.
Communications manager Alan Bartlett commented: We saw people from as far as Reading Oxford and London coming along to see what we can do.
It was very well attended and we must have seen over 400 people throughout the day.
We had various stalls with model lifeboats on and games such as hook a duck and throw a rope and also an educational table and we gave people guided tours.
We also provided refreshments and asked people to make a donation whatever they feel they can afford. Its not particularly a money-making scheme although we usually do quite well its more about having a bit of fun and giving people a bit of excitement. Its our way of thanking them for all their support throughout the year.
