A covert Second World War surveillance team who were based at Hayling Island Sailing Club (HISC) will be publicly commemorated on May 21 for the final time. As part of D-Day memorial events the Coppists (as they were known) will be celebrated for the part they played in this historical event.

Under cover of darkness the group used small submarines and canoes to survey the beaches in France. This intelligence prove key to teh success of teh Normandy landings.

Unfortunately in the last few months some members of the group heave passed away meaning this is most likely the last time they can be celebrated.

The BBCs Sally Taylor will be presenting the televised show while TV historian Dan Snow will be delivering the keynote address. This will take place in front of the granite memorial that Prince Charles was instrumental in bringing to the island. The Coppists have a special connection to the Prince as it was his godfather Lord Louis Mountbatten who established them.

Robin Walton another campaigner for the monument said: The island will celebrate and commemorate the achievements of the wonderful Second World War Copp unit marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day and their vital contribution to the success of the Normandy landings on June 6 1944.

Also on the schedule will be speeches led by Lord Richards of Herstmonceux a march past band wreath laying and unveiling of a dedicated Copp seat. Hon Timothy Knatchbull Lord Louis Mountbattens grandson will conducted this part of the tribute.
