Hayling is waking to yet more devastation destruction and problems caused by overnight storm force winds torrential rain and tidal storm surge. According to reports this morning the bridge across to the island had to be closed around midnight due to safety concerns as sea water overtopped and spilled onto the road. Areas around Northney also suffered flooding with some areas cut off.

The eastern flank of the island was also hit with Creek Road and Southwood Road residents having to endure large amounts of flood water surging in from the sea these areas were impassable at one point although seem to be open now.

Shingle deposits being put in place along the Beachlands foreshore to replenish sea defences have been washed away. A number of beach huts to the left of the Inn on the Beach have suffered further structural problems as a result of wind and waves.

Assessing the damage this morning teams are on site at the various scenes around the island ready for the clean up operation to begin. The rain is currently holding off and gale force winds are forecast to slowly abate as the day wears on. Much calmer conditions are predicted for tomorrow.

Spring tides are still in effect with the next high water due around noon. Vigilance is encouraged and caution is advised for anyone heading to the beach or living close to the seafront.
